Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
