Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
