The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
