Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
